Many
thousands of years ago, the Atlantic Ocean was dotted with hundreds of
marshy islands, surrounding a continent which was an earthly paradise.
Blossoming fruit trees covered the rolling hills. The buildings in the
capitol city gleamed golden in the sunshine that filtered through its
canopies. Circling through the city, a glimmering canal teemed with
commercial ships and pleasure boats.
The
people were adept at using their consciousness to perform what seem to
us to be miracles. This enabled them to dream up and create incredible
technology. Clinics used electromagnetic energy to heal people and keep
them youthful. Magnetic engines powered small flying cars that floated
quietly, like bubbles, around cities and towns. Huge stones were moved
with sound waves to build monuments. A means was developed to
electromagnetically change the form of any matter and this technology
was used to drill into the molten core of the earth to tap its energy.
Over
time, scientists became the ruling class as they supplied most power to
the population. As they became powerful and wealthy, they grew less
tolerant of those who questioned their activities. Frequent earthquakes
became a problem and many thought the power plants created instability
in the earth’s crust. The technocrats insisted their endeavors were
safe, yet the loudest dissidents were discredited.
One
group of priests divined that their homeland would eventually be
destroyed, so they left quietly, in long ships, and sailed east where
they found the island of Camelot. Snakes tattooed on their wrists
denoted that their sect had mastered the magic of consciousness. They
built a refuge, high on a mountain for any others who would follow. They
taught their magic to the little people with whom they shared the land.
Atlantis
was wracked with earthquakes and landslides, but was quite dependent on
the power tapped from the earth. Whole farms and villages were
swallowed by earthquakes. Coastal towns were washed away in landslides. A
volcano near the coast became active. People fled, deeply unhappy at
leaving what had once been a comfortable paradise.
Some
fishers and farmers who were displaced took ships far across the ocean
to the west and settled there to the north and south. Some took ships to
Camelot and waited for Atlantis to return to normal. Some dissident
scientists flew airships over the marshes southeast to arid lands. They
warned the incredulous people there of a coming deluge. All took plants
and livestock and records of their knowledge.
Displaced
people sighed and longed for their old way of life and their homeland.
Some travelled back, but found the land was too tenuous to support them
or the sea level had risen to where they no longer had property. They
were angry at the powers that be for not helping them stay.
People
in Atlantis hoped the land would stabilize with the reduced energy
needs of the remaining people. But nothing stabilized. People got used
to having the earth shake several times a day. One morning, Atlantis
awoke to black skies, lightning bolts and clouds of ash. They evacuated
in all the ships they could find, but by midday, a huge explosion rent
the continent and the gaping fault swallowed the land. The sea closed in
over Atlantis and giant waves swept the oceans.
The
priests on Camelot welcomed several boats which arrived just in time
for the refugees to escape the waves that rocked the shores after the
cataclysm shook their homeland. Wreckage washed up on the rocks for
weeks as the sea level rose. A few of the technocrats made it to far
western shores, but were not capable of surviving in that wilderness.
People
from Atlantis had settled the coastline of the far west continent for
several years, hoping they could eventually return home. But tidal waves
and weak sunlight dimmed by ash suggested a different story. For weeks,
they waited for the skies to clear, for the ocean to subside and become
calm. But when explorers went out they found the ocean deep and
fearsome; the islands and marshy places gone. It was difficult to cross
this new ocean, and when they finally sailed to where Atlantis should
be, they could not find anything they recognized.
After
several years, those who fled Atlantis began to see how lucky they
were. Being displaced from Atlantis had saved them from destruction.
Being marginalized moved them to create new societies. Because they had
been in the middle class, they were far more self sufficient than those
citizens who escaped later, and they were content to prosper in a more
controlled and balanced way. Because they had been schooled in spiritual
practices, they were better able to face hardships in new lands. They
vowed never to forget what they had learned.
Those
who fled to what is now the Middle East warned people how angry the
gods would become if civilization became so imbalanced again. For many
centuries stories and pictures from that area featured airships and told
of settlers from the sky, but advanced knowledge was kept secret from
the general populace.
Settlers
in Camelot believed that had Atlantis relied on spiritual power and
magic, it would have thrived. These settlers perfected their magic over
centuries, served as chieftains and teaching egalitarian ways of
government such as the round table. Stories abound of the magical races
on the western shores of the British Isles.
Those
who settled in the west taught their children to be in tune with the
planet who is mother to all. They felt lucky to have preserved little
technology. They remained fairly nomadic in memory of their exodus, and
governed themselves in such a way that no one group could get all the
power. They taught their children how they had come from the east across
the great Atlantic.
Thousands
of years later, people reading these stories cannot explain them and so
dismiss them as primitive myths. Few take them seriously, and few
embrace the lessons of Atlantis.
