“It looks like… ah… people dine here….”

“Watch what you say around here, OK?”

He
shuffled in his chair nervously, then grabbed me by the collar from
across the table. In a vicious whisper, he barked into my ear; “They’relooking at us, man! We’re the only white guysin this place!”

Ah, yes… so we were. I licked my lips and put on my sunglasses.

“Don’ttaunt them, man! Put your glasses back on, man!”

“Relax,” I said. “They’re prescription.”

She nodded and walked to the other end of the room.

“Listen,” I said. “We’renot
the only white guys in the bar.” I took off my sunglasses, “Look me in
the face.” His hands were on the pepper shaker, shaking like mad, and he
looked up, just barely. “I’m not a white man, Jon,” I said. “Look at my
skin.”

I
held up my arm to his and it quickly became obvious. I laughed like a
hyena and put on my sunglasses. His eyes widened, and the waitress came
back with two menus….
