On Sunday March 4^th, 2012 a chilly start to the day saw the best of Palm Beach and Wellington society gather together for the eighth annual Polo With Pedro benefit. Held to honor Pedro Morrison who sat on the board of the YMCA of the Palm Beaches this event has become one of the biggest fundraisers of the equestrian season.

The paintings of the human figure by British artist Jenny Saville (b.1970) have been infrequently exhibited since first premiered in the late 1990s. Included in the 1997 exhibition of the collection of British marketing giant Charles Saatchi entitled Sensation, she did not earn the notoriety of her slightly older peers, �the young British artists� for unusual materials. Instead, Saville masterfully painted with oil on canvas and concentrated on the human figure but still created provocative work.

There are no concrete statistics on how many have been trafficked in Palm Beach County;
however, the United Nations estimates that 700,000 to 4 million women and children are
trafficked around the world for purposes of forced prostitution, labor and other forms of
exploitation every year. Trafficking is estimated to be a $7 billion dollar annual business.
Victims of trafficking are subject to gross human rights violations including rape, torture,
forced abortions, starvation and threats of torturing or murdering family members. Florida has the characteristics that attract and promote an environment for human trafficking: migrants, agriculture, location, transient traffic.

On Thurs., Oct 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., the Palm Beach Chapter of The Foundation for Community Betterment will host a happy hour at Pistache French Bistro to raise funds for her mother, Carolyne, who recently underwent triple heart-bypass surgery and aortic valve replacement. She now requires cardiac rehabilitation as well as more tests and procedures.

Dealing with the Publix Closing

Saturday, April 23^rd at 10pm the Publix Supermarket serving the Town of Palm Beach closed and shutdown. The store will be demolished and a new, larger one built in its place.

That new store is set to open by December 18, 2011 just in time for the new year.

For approximately 8 months this will leave the Town of Palm Beach without a major market within the town to serve and meet the grocery needs of town residents and employees.

This year�s area of focus will be the Kings Road area in the estate section of Palm Beach. Before Kings Road existed, the 45,000 square foot Cielito Lindo property dominated the area, stretching from ocean to lake. The property had been designed by Marion Sims Wyeth in 1927. After World War II the property area was subdivided into 5 separate properties. The main living room was demolished and in its place was put Kings Road, cutting straight through the original property.

A Closer Look Film & Lecture Series at the Norton Museum of Art

Scott Eyman, author and book editor of the Palm Beach Post, hosts screenings of four great American films. Following each screening, Scott leads discussions about the film in the context of American entertainment and culture during the mid 20th century.

In conjunction with the special exhibition To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum, Glenn Tomlinson, William Randolph Hearst Curator of Education, and Crissy Carter, Assistant Curator of Education, lead four sessions exploring ancient Egyptian culture. Each session begins with a brief power-point presentation, followed by gallery time with individual works on view.

The first exhibition of Storrs�s work in over 20 years, Machine-Age Modernist will highlight his sculptures, drawings, and paintings drawn from various national collections, including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Corcoran Museum of Art, among other leading institutions and private lenders. One of America�s foremost modernists, John Storrs (1885�1956) produced a remarkable body of sculpture and was at the forefront of both European and American avant-garde movements. Storrs became part of a vibrant, early 20th-century culture enthralled with invention and stretching the visual parameters of art.

An intimate look at one of New Orleans' most colorful characters: the charismatic vegetable salesman 'Mr. Okra,' who provides a glimpse into the soul of an American city.

For director T.G. Herrington (http://www.nomdeguerre.tv/), who has heard Mr. Okra hawking his goods in and around New Orleans since he was a small child, this sharply rendered character piece is the beginning of a love song, the first chapter in what will soon become a six-part feature-length study in the city's local color. The completed documentary, Other Side of Rampart, will act as a way to archive and preserve a part of New Orleans that is disappearing before our very eyes. The most challenging aspect of completing this short involved simply trying to understand Mr. Okra himself. He speaks in a difficult vernacular known regionally as '5th Ward patois'. Herrington remarks that a friend once proclaimed 'I finally knew I was a local when I could understand what Okra was saying!' The filmmaker has kindly provided subtitles for your viewing pleasure.

Premiering in the Animation Showcase of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, we are extremely pleased to present Adrien Merigeau's (http://oldfangs.blogspot.com/) poetic ode to familial legacy. Working with collaborator Alan Holly and the support of Irish animation arm Cartoon Saloon, Merigeau and company set out to create a hierarchy free-environment, in which all creative forces are free to do what they feel is best. What results is a film that looks and sounds like all their friends. In fact, the score was even composed and performed by Adrien's own parents! The programming staff kindly invites you to experience 'old fangs,' and take note of an emerging talent making his Festival debut.

A portrait of Dr. Richard J. Bing on his hundredth birthday.

After being awarded the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival for his much beloved feature film debut 'Paper Heart,' Nicholas Jasenovec returns this year with this delightful short documentary of an exceptional man turning 100-years-old. Shortly before his centennial birthday celebration, the film's subject, Dr. Richard S. Bing, learned of the Bing search engine and wrote a letter to Microsoft about his life and upcoming milestone. Jasenovec, who was at work scripting a feature with writing partner Bill Hader, was asked to meet with the man, and instantly knew he wanted to make a short about Dr. Bing. When asked if there's anything he wishes to pass on to the film's audiences, Dr. Bing provides these words of wisdom: 'Sometimes a ripe fruit has more flavor than one straight from the tree!'

Sundance Film Festival founder Robert Redford and festival director John Cooper introduce the new Sundance USA program. On Thursday, January 28, the Sundance Film Festival dispatches eight filmmakers with their films from Park City to eight cities across the country to screen and discuss direct-from-Festival films with audiences. Tickets will be available through each theatre's individual box office.

The Preservation Foundation will host a special free-to-all symposium regarding Modernism at Risk on Wednesday, Feb 3rd from 10am to 12 noon.
