The Gordon Parks Foundation, founded in memory of the boundary-breaking photographer and filmmaker, handed out awards at a gala dinner last night to a diverse quartet of creative talents: Liya Kebede, Bruce Weber, Russell Simmons, and Isabel Toledo.

Parks, who died in 2006 at the age of 93, shot for Vogue before becoming the first African-American photographer on the Life masthead; his subjects ranged from Paris fashions to the Harlem streets, and he directed a pretty well-known movie in the seventies. 'Who hasn't seen Shaft? That changed everything!' Kebede exclaimed. (Chris Benz, for one: 'I only like movies that are set in high school,' he said.)

During pre-dinner cocktails, Weber took a break from kibitzing with Ralph Lauren and Anna Wintour to pay homage to Parks. 'I grew up with all those pictures. He was sort of like our answer to Cecil Beaton,' he said. 'You know, Cecil Beaton took fashion, portraits, and family and war photographs�and designed clothes, for My Fair Lady. And Gordon Parks was just completely open like that.'

Filly in fashion: Rachel Alexandra poses for Vogue

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) � She is a clotheshorse without the clothes: Rachel Alexandra has posed for a photo spread in Vogue.

Pictures of the Preakness-winning filly were shot Friday by fashion photographer Steven Klein for the magazine's August issue.

Rachel Alexandra had to be awakened in her stall when it was time for her star turn.

'Done photo shoots before, but first one for Vogue,' said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen who held the shank on the filly during the session.

The magazine spread grew out of a trip to the Preakness by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

'She was there at the Preakness and was inspired, like so many other women were,' said Caroline Shaw, a spokeswoman for Jess Jackson, the filly's majority owner.

Among those looking on was Barbara Banke, Jackson's wife.

There was no star treatment for Mine That Bird. The Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up quietly galloped twice around the Churchill Downs track.

On Friday, it was decided Rachel Alexandra will not run in the June 6 Belmont Stakes. Co-owner Jess Jackson said the filly deserves a vacation. Mine That Bird is scheduled for his final workout Monday before the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Over 1,200 guests descended on Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni last night for an exclusive preview of Bulgari's 125th anniversary retrospective. 'I want a snake bracelet from 1972 all in gold,' said Ginnifer Goodwin as she admired a roomful of the Italian jeweler's signature Tubogas serpents, including Diana Vreeland's to-die-for belt. Chloë Sevigny also counts herself a fan of Bulgari's seventies and eighties creations. 'I've worn so many pieces in this exhibition,' she told us. Lucky girl, but perhaps not quite as fortunate as Elizabeth Taylor. The jewels that the legendary actress loaned from her personal collection were arrayed in a room of their own with Richard Burton's famous quote decorating one wall: 'I introduced her to beer and she introduced me to Bulgari.'

Afterward, it was off to a dinner for 400 at the Castel Sant'Angelo, which dates to Emperor Hadrian's days. Even the Italians�Margherita Missoni, Carla Fendi, and Gina Lollobrigida included�were wowed by the fortress' torch-lined bridge and the seemingly never-ending labyrinth of stairs. 'I've sweated out my cocktails,' said Jessica Alba as we climbed to the top. The 360-degree terrace views of Rome and the hardworking DJs kept the crowd entertained. The 2009 Cannes Film Festival is underway. And after the disaster that was the Met gala, it�s nice to see the starlets haven�t completely lost their fashion sense! Maybe they realized The Met Gala was wrecktastic, or perhaps it�s something about the French air that makes them want to get in touch with their fashion-self, but whatever it may be they�ve got it back (thank God) so we can all ogle at the amazing dresses yet again.

O.K. they�re not all amazing. After all, how can we appreciate all the really pretty ones if I don�t include at least a few flubs? But at least there�s plenty of nice ones to feed our eyes with.

The 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 13 to May 24,2009. Obviously I can�t get all the celebs at all the events, so I�ve just grabbed a few of the best looks to feature.

The biggest star at the American Ballet Theatre's opening-night gala wasn't a performer but a guest. As everyone knows by now, Michelle Obama was on hand�in black sleeveless Alaïa�to enjoy a program that included excerpts from Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet and a jazz number featuring Herbie Hancock on piano. Of the night's many curtain calls, none matched the standing ovation the First Lady received when she took the stage; if there was a no-flash rule inside the Met, it certainly went down the tubes during her brief remarks at the dais. And to the delight of opera-glass gawkers, Michelle O. took in the proceedings from a very visible parterre seat, alongside fellow honorary chairs Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and Carolina Herrera, who co-sponsored the evening.

Thanks to the guest of honor and the abundance of seasonal frocks, this black-tie evening was about fashion as much as dance. Veronica Webb and Rachel Roy paused to discuss Michelle's best wardrobe picks on their way in. 'I love her in Alaïa, and I love her in her cardies with her belt,' Roy offered. Webb chimed in, 'My favorite fashion moment for her was that she wore her Tracy Feith dress more than once.'

Kelly Ripa denied that the guest of honor had anything to do with her decision to show biceps. 'It's springtime�good luck finding a dress with sleeves!' Ballet certainly tops the other fine arts as a way to firm up arms and just about everything else, noted Dree Hemingway, the model and former student at the School of American Ballet. 'My body has always been really toned because of ballet,' said the 21-year-old, who was there on the arm of Francisco Costa. 'I don't think I'll ever have to work out�until I get really old. Talk to me in a couple years.'

The London-based, Nigerian-born designer, who's married to the American curator Thelma Golden, was experiencing the after-effects of a successful trunk show at Barneys the day before, during which he'd helped dozens of ladies into and out of his best-selling patchwork printed tunic dresses, orchid-sleeve jackets, and high-waisted cheetah trousers. 'I'm knackered,' he said, then proceeded to keep his tablemates Iman and Iris Apfel entertained all night.

'Many of us make our livings finding things and collecting stuff, but there's no greater curator of anything than Duro,' said Singer during her toast. 'And that's increased exponentially since he married Thelma.' Case in point: After everyone had sung Olowu and his pal Amanda Brooks 'Happy Birthday' and then dug into the delicious red velvet cake, Golden table-hopped, touting the authenticity of the ingredients�'beet juice makes it that color, not food coloring,' she said�as well as the Harlem bakery, Make My Cake, from whence it came. Karl Lagerfeld and co. would have made legendary Venice resident Peggy Guggenheim proud last night, so convincingly did they turn the patio of the Hotel Excelsior Lido into a decadent dance club. 'It's like a movie set, of a movie I would really want to be in,' said Francesco Vezzoli. Jefferson Hack was more concerned with the math: 'If just one of these bungalows is a few hundred euros for the day, how much would all of them be? Do you think you get every tenth one free?' Maybe Chanel skimped on the bar: Champagne and wine were the only alcoholic beverages on offer�not that that stopped anyone from imbibing. When SomethingALaMode, a cover band that specializes in ABBA hits, took the stage, models by the dozen hit the dance floor, bumping and grinding on men in sequined jackets who were only too happy to be vastly outnumbered.

It was a scene that none who were present will soon forget, but Lagerfeld, as ever, played it cool. Later at dinner, when talk turned to his generous gift to the director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection�he presented her with a pair of the art patron's original bat-winged shades along with their monogrammed case�he quipped, 'What was I going to do with them? I have my own glasses.'
