The recently released Joint Operational Access Concept (JOAC) foreshadows an era of increased constraints on U.S. military actions abroad. The reality is that U.S. military power now competes on a substantially more complicated playing field in a number of important regions around the world. As a consequence, U.S. policymakers and military commanders should anticipate novel obstacles to global access emerging from some combination of improved adversary military capabilities and new, less favorable political realities. In short, the comprehensive anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) challenge is rapidly compounding, necessitating innovative U.S. military responses to overcome it.

Some concerns expressed by Washington observers and decisionmakers are exaggerated. However, some are real, and a look at the record shows that Iran has definite objectives in courting countries in the Americas neighborhood.

President Hamid Karzai visited India this week and signed a wide-ranging strategic partnership agreement with India. His visit comes shortly after the assassination of prominent Afghan leader Burhanuddin Rabbani who was the head of the Afghan High Peace Council. Earlier this week, Karzai outlined a new approach on peace efforts to the Afghan people with a shift toward talking to Pakistan instead of reconciliation efforts with the Taliban by saying, �We are involved with the governments and not the forces that depend on them, that is why we should talk to the governments who make the decisions.� Against this backdrop, Karzai�s visit to New Delhi and the signing of the strategic partnership agreement represent the initial moves of geostrategic posturing by regional actors as the United States prepares to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by 2014.

The Obama administration has made a request to Congress for an extraordinary contribution to a number of the multilateral development banks (MDBs). It is critical that Congress act on this request so that the United States can maintain its overwhelming influence in these institutions, ensure that we have strong multilateral funding partners for the many challenges we face, and in so doing, invest in our own national security. This request for the so-called General Capital Increase comes at a time of very serious fiscal austerity. Maintaining our de facto control over the MDBs through this contribution is a critical investment in U.S. national security because these institutions provide money and advice that, in fundamental ways, support our allies, as well as U.S. foreign, economic, and national security policy objectives, in places such as Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Haiti, Colombia, Tunisia, and Southern Sudan. A strong set of MDBs under U.S. leadership will be critical instruments for achieving victory in the Long War.

This year�s area of focus will be the Kings Road area in the estate section of Palm Beach. Before Kings Road existed, the 45,000 square foot Cielito Lindo property dominated the area, stretching from ocean to lake. The property had been designed by Marion Sims Wyeth in 1927. After World War II the property area was subdivided into 5 separate properties. The main living room was demolished and in its place was put Kings Road, cutting straight through the original property.

According to new polls, US President Barack Obama's approval ratings have dropped across the board. According to a new USA Today/Gallup poll, Americans are losing faith in the president's plan in Afghanistan and Iraq, where wars have been going on for years and casualties have risen. 43% of those polled say that it was a mistake for Obama's predecessor George W. Bush to go to war after terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center buildings in New York on September 11, 2001. Barely a third of respondents favoured Obama's strategy in the two Middle East wars. In another Gallup poll, just 36% of poll respondents supported the way Obama was handling Afghanistan, a sharp decline from 48% in February.
